Here are located two books by PhD psychologist, an American, a Canadian, that ask the question, "Who decides who is normal?"
Both authors challenge vigorously that is widely recognized that to decide top finishers, who is normal psychiatrist and who is not.
Psychiatrist (and other therapists) are even "normal"? Hardly. How can anyone who selects other peoples misery day in listening to and we be my day, as normal, provided that "average" or "typical"? We are clearly not normal therapists, we are a minority, and we are unique. So called people in others. So are you.
Normality is notoriously difficult to define. What we usually mean by "abnormally" insane, psychotic, mentally ill. Some authors [especially psychiatrist Thomas Szasz (the myth of mental illness) and Peter Breggin (toxic Psychiatry)] attack the concept of "mental" illness, this is a metaphor mistakenly made concrete or that drug treatment adds only a suffering woes that so-called mental illness "Problems in Living" is called more appropriately and "treated" the courts or with exceptional care, Empathy and understanding.
Thirty years ago, Dr. Siebert committed was in the hospital as a "paranoid schizophrenic". He claims that he was sane, that at the time by a "developmental crisis". But the DSM-IV, like its predecessors, is a farce. This is the only conclusion you after reading Dr. Caplan's very detailed presentation of the partisan negotiations ("horse trading") can do that in the determination of what is and what not in the band.
An expert in the research, Dr. Caplan underlines the lack of data on which DSM-IV is based. It was a few years ago, when the Committee (all white men of a certain age) tried to make a mental disorder to PMS. What we do as a therapist is art, intuition, relationship. Medicalization problems in life, to do custom students, such as DSM is a disservice to clients and therapists. Customers, because they need care, not categories. And therapists, because such illusory security us, such as Dr Siebert Mr or Dr Caplan of opponent, leading to a collective delusion, scientific forces.
Read Dr Caplan's book and weep for the thousands of people (mainly women, course) whose lives have been damaged, of which is marked with the stigma a mental illness, when in fact their only problem, that was like Dr. Siebert, they dared to be different. Or man.
